Malawi has two representatives in the Africa’s most popular reality TV series, Big Brother Africa. The sixth season of Big Brother styled Big Brother Africa Amplified in Johannesburg Sunday night.
As first revealed by Nyasa Times, 27-year-old Tendai Namate, a Power 101 FM DJ (DJ Lomwe) was unveiled as one of the housemates.
However, first to enter the house before DJ Lomwe was surprisingly a Malawian female contestant from Lilongwe, Felicia.
Felicia, who is in a relationship, has a 4 year-old child and says she entered Big Brother Amplified to represent her country, to do her part in making her country proud and to change her life and the lives of many others.
She told DStv website that she will entertain with her dancing.
“They will learn a life of a true Malawian lady,” she says. If she wins, she’ll get a roof over her head, donate to charity and “invest in something that will keep my life going to reach my goals”.
Her motto is: “Live life to the fullest – make hay while the sun still shines”.
DJ Lomwe was the last housemate to be unveiled. He entered the house as the old and popular Malawian flag was the one exhibited, representing the two Malawian representatives.
The radio DJ said he wants to “expose my talent on the biggest platform on the continent”.
Lomwe said show business “is my nature”.
He told DStv: “I have charisma and a great sense of humour, I like to have a lot of fun with my life – plus I am quite handsome.”
Should he win, he will open his own media business (a radio station) and visit his little brother in the UK.
His role model is BBC Radio 1 presenter Chris Moyles because he inspired Lomwe to pursue a career where all he can do is be himself. His proudest achievement is his radio career: “a lot of people thought I wouldn’t get far without a normal office job, but I’m proving them wrong daily”.
The best advice he ever received is “first you get the money, then you get the power – then you get the money” courtesy of Tony Montana in the movie Scarface. He dislikes people who gossip, hypocrites and people who can’t take a joke.
Last year’s winner was Nigerian Uti Nwachukwu while Meryl Shikwambane and Mwisho Mwampamba got engaged during the show and are now married.
This year’s winner walks away with $200 000.
There are 14 participating countries: Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. – (Reporting by Judith Moyo, Nyasa Times)
