The country’s beauty queen Miss Malawi Susan Mtegha, who is currently in China to participate in the August 12 Miss World, has failed to make it in two Challenge events namely Miss World Talent and Miss World Top Model.
According to the Miss World 2012 website, Miss World Top Model 2012 qualifiers were announced on July 23. There were 47 contestants who were selected as semi-finalists whose winner will be announced during the Miss World event.
The list however, has seen some semi-finalists from African countries among them Kenya, Angola, South Sudan, South Africa and Nigeria.
Mtegha has also missed out in the Miss World Talent 2012 qualifiers whose winners were announced on July 21. There were 24 contestants who were selected as semi-finalists and will go through the finals on August 10.
This category seems to have been tough as no African country has made it in the top 24. This is the category where all the contestants were asked to showcase their different talents.
The other challenge events the contestants are expected to undergo include Beach Beauty, Sports, Beauty with a Purpose, Multimedia Award and the World Fashion Designer Ball which took place at Shanghai, China on July 26, and the results are expected to be announced later.
Mtegha also participated in this challenge, parading in turquoise and chocolate brown in what looked like raw silk.
Apart from participating in the challenge events, undergoing rehearsals, the contestants have visited several places including the famous Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Recently the contestants also had the privilege of a visit from an Ordos government representative bearing gifts. In partnership with ZTE Telecoms, the 2012 Miss World contestants received Android smart phones.
Malawi has just returned to the Miss World this year after missing out last year however, in the previous events representatives have failed to achieve any goal apart from making a formal representation. Mtegha told the media during her departure that her participation was not about formal representation but rather she would battle to win the Miss World crown.
“My participation is not about formal representation but I want to win and make history for the country and this is why I wanted it so much to participate,” said the 24-year old from Mzuzu. Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela is the current Miss World.
