Denmark’s Euro 2020 star Eriksen is in stable condition after collapse in opening match

June 12 (UPI) — Denmark’s Euro 2020 star Christian Eriksen is in stable condition after collapsing Saturday in opening match against Finland in Copenhagen, the Union of European Football Associations announced.

Erisken, a 29-year-old midfielder, collapsed during a throw-in shortly before the end of the first half and medical staff worked to resuscitate him with CPR and a defibrillator, prompting the game’s suspension, CNN reported.

His teammates surrounded him to protect him from view as he received treatment on the turf, according to the CNN report.

“The match had been suspended due to a medical emergency which involved Denmark’s Christian Eriksen,” the UEFA said in a statement. “The player is now in hospital and in a stable condition.”

“UEFA wishes Christian Eriksen a full and speedy recovery and wishes to thank both teams for their exemplary attitude,” the statement added.

Though the game was halted, the UEFA later agreed to restart the match between Denmark and Finland following consultation with players on both teams.

“The first four minutes of the first-half were played, there was then a 5-minute half-time break followed by the second half,” the UEFA statement said.

The Denmark native plays club football for Inter Milan, and moved to the Serie A side in 2020 after seven years with Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.

“Get well soon, Christian,” Tottenham Hotspur tweeted. “The whole Spurs family is with you.”

Denmark’s match against Finland was the first of Euro 2020 since it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bleacher Report noted.
