16 Rwandan citizens deported from Uganda

16 Rwandan citizens were deported from Uganda on Wednesday through the Cyanika border in the southwestern part of Uganda and in the northeastern part of Rwanda.

According to a report by Rwandan media outlet, The New Times, the deportees claim they went to Uganda legally between 2016 and 2018 to carry out business activities. Among the 16 people were nine men, five women and two children.

Rwanda and Uganda have had tense relations in the last few years with both countries accusing each other of interference in the other’s affairs.

The tensions have seen a number of border closures implemented affecting the economic and social lives of families in both countries.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame in a televised interview recently warned Rwandans against traveling to Uganda citing alleged illegal arrests and torture.
