Netflix just confirmed that a spinoff of That ‘70s Show, titled That ’90s Show’ is currently in the works, and we are honestly SO excited for this. So, here’s the lowdown…
We’ve all heard of That ’70s Show – if you haven’t binged it multiple times already, why not? GO, GO, GO! If you’re not familiar with the popular series, let us clue you in. Well, it ran for eight seasons in the USA on Fox and graced our screens from 1998 until 2006, and is the reason that we know and love some of the most famous actors in 2021. The original show starred the liked of: Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama – star-studded or what!?
The popular comedy show was set in the late 1970s and focused on six teenagers who lived in Point Place, Winsconsin (yep, the town was fictional). The series followed the teens as they navigated growing up, going to high school and falling in love. A big theme throughout the show was their love of the green stuff (FYI: cannabis).
Loved by millennials and gen-z, Netflix noticed the popularity of the original show and on October 8 they announced that they were commissioning a spinoff. Netflix revealed that the spinoff is set to be titled That ’90s Show and is currently in the works right now. They also announced that some of the original cast from the main show would be returning too – yay!
So… here is Here is *everything* To Know About Netflix’s That ’70s Show Spinoff, That ’90s Show.
What’s it going to be about?
It has been confirmed that just like That ’70s Show, the new spinoff will also take place in Wisconsin, America. Whereas the original was set in the 70s, the re-vamp will be set in 1995, and the spinoff will focus on lead character Leia Forman – the daughter of daughter of Eric Forman and Donna Pinciotti.
The show will be based Leia visits her grandparents, Kitty and Red Forman back in the fictional town of Point Place – where her parents grew up. And it’s there that she will follow in her parent’s footsteps with the next generation of Point Place teens.
The original creators of That ‘70s Show – Bonnie and Terry Turner – will be executive producers of the reboot. This marks the second attempt to revive the franchise, as in 2002 the creators attempted to launch That ’80s Show, but after one season that comprised of 13 episodes, Fox cancelled it.
Who will star in the spinoff?
Netflix hasn’t yet announced the lead cast for the hotly-anticipated spinoff about Leia and her friends, but some old faces have been confirmed.
Debora Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith have been confirmed as two original cast members who will be returning, and they will reprise their original roles while lending themselves as grandparents to Leia.
But it’s safe to say that we don’t think Ashton Kutcher will be reprising his role, because in a 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said, “That ’70s Show is a nostalgic show. I think it was nostalgic as it was being made, and now it’s nostalgic for a different reason. And I just don’t know that anything that we’re going to do that would be new would be better than what we did. And when you run that risk, I think it’s better to leave things alone.”
Is there a trailer? And when will it be released?
Sadly no trailer is available yet, but keep checking back – because as soon as one is available, we’ll have it! Also, no release date of yet – but we’re guessing by the end of 2022.
BRB, just going to binge That ’70s Show…
