Everyone is talking about The Unforgivable, Netflix’s forthcoming thriller starring Sandra Bullock. It has come just in time as well, since you’ve finished binge-watching Squid Game and the next series of Bridgerton isn’t set for release until 2022. Suddenly, your Netflix home screen is looking a little uninspiring. But don’t fear, there’s a new thriller to look forward to on the streaming platform – and something tells us The Unforgivable, starring Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis, is going to be the next thing we’re all talking about.
Netflix has released the trailer for the gripping new movie – which sees Hollywood legend, Sandra, looking tougher than ever as ex-con Ruth Slater – and it’s already racked up thousands of excited comments from film buffs. So what do we know about the brand new star-studded whodunnit murder mystery?
Here’s everything we’ve found out so far…
What’s The Unforgivable about?
The Unforgivable is an upcoming drama movie directed by Nora Fingscheidt, and written by Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz and Courtenay Miles. The US-reboot is based on the 2009 British miniseries written by Sally Wainwright.
The 2021 American movie version is set to star Sandra Bullock, who plays a woman who attempts to rebuild her life after serving time in prison for committing a violent crime.
Netflix’s official synopsis reads: “Released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime, Ruth Slater (Sandra Bullock) re-enters a society that refuses to forgive her past. Facing severe judgment from the place she once called home, her only hope for redemption is finding the estranged younger sister she was forced to leave behind.”
Who stars in The Unforgivable?
Alongside Sandra Bullock is powerhouse Viola Davis, Netflix regular Rob Morgan, Jon Bernthal, Vincent D’Onofrio, Richard Thomas, Linda Emond and Aisling Franciosi.
Sandra co-produced the film alongside Graham King and Veronica Ferres.
What is the story based on?
Interestingly, The Unforgivable is actually based on the British miniseries Unforgiven, which starred Suranne Jones and aired on ITV back in 2009.
Originally set in Halifax, Yorkshire, Suranne played a woman found who had served time in prison for murdering two police officers when she was a teenager. After she’s released, she’s determined to find her sister, who was adopted after she was incarcerated.
When and where was it filmed?
Filming began in Vancouver, Canada before the coronavirus pandemic in February 2020. Filming was due to wrap in April that same year, but filming came to a halt on March 13 due to the pandemic. Production then resumed on September 2, and concluded on October 15, in 2020.
When does The Unforgivable drop onto Netflix?
Launching in select cinemas on November 24, the film will be available on Netflix from December 10.

Yep! And you can watch it here:
Anything else we need to know?
Sandra has teased that there’s much more to the backstory of the film than the synopsis might give away. Cryptic.
She told Entertainment Weekly: “Finding out the background to the story of why she did what she did is sort of the whodunnit of this. It’s a murder mystery within a very complex character drama.”
Director Nora Fingscheidt added of the film’s impact: “I would love that [viewers] maybe reconsider their judgment of people who are outside the society, people who are massively disadvantaged because of their past.
“I think it’s worth sometimes taking a second look. It’s not so easy to reenter society. You might change in prison after 20 years quite a lot, but for the majority out there you’re still a prisoner and you will live with that forever. It’s really worth looking into details and giving people second chances. That is what I was thinking about a lot.”
We are seriously SO excited for this new murder mystery to drop.
