Nothing has escaped the influence of the return of Y2K’s trends. Cropped jumpers, skinny brows and baggy jeans are all having a moment. Now beaded phone charms are back in the spotlight too.
Just like Summer’s jewellery trends for colourful plastic rings and BFF beads, nostalgia is a major force in the resurgence of beaded phone charms’ onto the fashion radar. In my head Paris Hilton is strolling through the early Aughts, wearing a Versace chainmail slip dress, with her late, beloved chihuahua Tinkerbell under one arm. In her other hand, an assortment of phone charms are swinging from her flip-top Motorola… You can picture it too, right?
Fast forward to 2021. Our phones are our constant companions and beaded phone charms have been given the seal of approval from Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Kaia Gerber, Dua Lipa and Addison Rae this year. You can match – or clash – the rest of your *lewk* to your phone charm and, because they’re a relatively affordable shopping fix, we love the idea of switching them up as you change outfits.
Whichever way you show off your charms, they are definitely worth documenting with a mirror selfie. If retro is your aesthetic of choice, ASOS has you covered. There is a kitsch phone charm with fruit, heart and star beads or one with a yin-yang motif. Tali’s Chains have an acrylic and faux pearl beaded phone charm with smiley beads, available from Selfridges, and if you want to make a designer-sized investment, cult jewellery brand Roxanne Assoulin has a bright beaded version.
You could choose to match your beaded phone charm to your horoscope sign with one of the cute handmade charms we found on Etsy (wrap one up as a Christmas stocking filler for your bestie) or update your look with Hang On Bling’s pearl chain. Ok, now you’re ready for your close-up.
