The Supreme Court on Friday confirmed former Niger Delta Affairs Minister Godswill Akpabio as a candidate for the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Akwa Ibom Northwest Senate constituency scheduled for Feb. 25. The Apex Court, in a unanimous decision by a panel of five judges, upheld the appeal filed by Akpabio to challenge the court of appeals ruling that nullified his candidacy.
In a referee’s ruling read by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, the Supreme Court ruled that the Court of Appeals had no jurisdiction to interfere in matters of nominating candidates for elections that it believed fell within the party’s internal affairs. A Supreme Court panel has ruled in favor of the 10 issues brought by Akpabio, overturning the Abuja Court of Appeals ruling of November 14, 2022. The ruling ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Udom Ekpoudom as a bona fide presidential candidate. APC at the Senate Convention
