Itunu Hotonu, who was born on 18 January 1959, is the first woman to attain the rank of a Rear admiral in the Nigerian Navy.
She is the first woman in both Nigeria and all of Africa to reach such a distinguished rank in the Navy.
Hotonu was accepted as an officer candidate at the National Defence Academy, Abuja, in 1985.
She was the first woman to enroll in the Academy and graduated as the top overall student. For the best research project, She won the Commander-in-Chief’s Prize and also the Commandant’s Prize. Hotonu was also among the first architects to enlist in the Nigerian Navy.
Rear Admiral Itunu Hotonu persisted despite her career being wholly at odds with her family’s expectations because she enjoyed a challenge.
