Raila Odinga, head of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party, acted only hours after more than seven ODM party elected leaders met with President William Ruto at State House. Raila is reportedly trying to quell a rising revolt within his Azimio and, to a larger extent, ODM camp by convening a two-day retreat for the Azimio Parliamentary Group in Machakos town starting on Thursday.
On Tuesday of next week, when Parliament begins its sessions, Raila and top Azimio leadership will meet to establish the agenda. The meeting concluded, Raila will likely stage his anti-Ruto demonstration in Machakos town on Friday.
This follows today’s meeting between William Ruto and a group of ODM legislators led by Langata MP Felix Oduori and Kisumu Senator Professor Tom Ojienda at the State House. The ODM party and its leaders responded angrily to the gathering by publicly distancing themselves from the nine, saying they did not have the party’s support.
Even before the visit to the White House was over, ODM Party Chairman and nominated MP John Mbadi announced his intention to resign from office. Since the end of the last General Election, Mbadi has been at odds with some ODM party members. However, he claims he has done his part as ODM chair for the past nine years.
With this statement, he was firing back against Azimio leaders who have been criticizing him and others for ignoring opposition demonstrations organized by Azimio’s leader, Raila Odinga.
